Carrie Symonds’ mother has been visiting Downing Street to help look after her toddler grandson Wilfred as part of a coronavirus “household bubble” with the Prime Minister.
Miss Symonds mother, Josephine McAffee, is now assisting her daughter Carrie and boyfriend Boris Johnson with care for her grandson Wilfred in the spacious flat above 11 Downing Street.
Sources confirmed that Ms McAffee has now formed a ‘household bubble’ with her daughter’s young family.
According to Government’s rules, people can form a support bubble with another household of any size if they live by themselves or their household includes a child who is under the age of one or under on Dec 2 last year.
Miss Symonds, 32, an environmental campaigner and former director of communications at the Conservative Party, is the first unmarried partner of a Prime Minister to reside in 10 Downing Street.
The pair moved into the 11 Downing St flat when Mr Johnson became Tory leader and Prime Minister in July 2019. The pair announced their engagement in February last year and Wilfred was born on April 29.
A spokesman for Mr Johnson declined to comment. A spokesman for Miss Symonds also said she "declined to comment on private arrangements, given that Carrie’s mother is a private individual".
Miss Symonds was born in London in 1988, the child of an affair between Ms McAffee, a lawyer at the Independent newspaper, and the newspaper’s co-founder Matthew Symonds. She was raised by Ms McAffee in East Sheen, south west London.
There is thought to be plenty of room in the No 11 flat as it comfortably housed David Cameron, who lived there with his wife Samantha and three children when he was Prime Minister.
The Camerons moved into the 11 Downing St flat in 2010 after declaring that the neighbouring flat above 10 Downing Street was too small for them.
This verdict surprised Lord Hammond of Runnymede, when – as Philip Hammond – he moved into the 10 Downing St flat as Chancellor in 2016. At the time he told friends: "It is not actually that small – it is 3,500 square feet!"
