A teen murder suspect has been blinded in one eye in a jail stabbing.

Jabari Fanty, 18, suffered “gruesome” injuries.

The incident sparked a major security alert at category B HMP Doncaster, which is run by private firm Serco.

Fanty is awaiting trial over the shooting of 20-year-old Ramey Salem in Sheffield last year.

A source said: “Tensions are running high in the prison.”

They added: “We think he was attacked with a shank – a homemade weapon – and the injuries were pretty gruesome.”

John Hewitson, the jail’s director, confirmed: “A prisoner was injured and his face and an eye were damaged.

"We are working with the police and the person who attacked him will face a criminal prosecution.”

Fanty was charged with Ramey’s murder in November.

Three others also face charges. Ministry of Justice figures reveal there were 23,113 assaults in jails last year – equal to almost 450 per week.

Targets have included serial killer Levi Bellfield and Sarah Payne murderer Roy Whiting.
