Nearly half of England's towns and cities have seen a fall in new Covid-19 cases – but a surge in cases in the North West is causing alarm.

Latest Public Health England figures reveal Knowsley and Liverpool had the sharpest rise in people testing positive in the week to January 9.

Barking & Dagenham in East London still has the highest infection rate in the country, but has seen a slight week-on-week fall in cases.

Knowsley is now England's second worst hotspot, overtaking parts of London – where pressure on hospitals has forced mayor Sadiq Khan to declare a state of emergency.

Of the 315 local areas in England, 154 (49%) have seen a rise in case rates, 159 (50%) have seen a fall and two are unchanged.

In the south west, Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole has also seen an alarming rise in cases, now recording an infection rate of 881 per 100,000 people – up from 607.3 a week earlier.

Today is the deadliest day on record since the start of the pandemic, with 1,564 fatalities confirmed.

The grim milestone comes nearly one year since the earliest known death involving Covid-19 in the UK, according to the ONS.

The victim was 84-year-old Peter Attwood from Chatham in Kent. His death on January 30 last year was not formally confirmed as having involved Covid-19 until the end of August.

Earlier today government insiders warned that lockdown measures could be tightened further.

  • Earlier today Matt Hancock threatened to axe a key lockdown rule on exercise after he warned people are “taking the Mickey”.

The Health Secretary said he was “very reluctant” to remove the rule which allows two people from different households or bubbles to exercise together, in an open space like a park.

But he did not rule out axing the rule if, he claimed, people continued not to follow the spirit of the rules.

And he said some people are “stretching” rules and “taking the Mickey”.

The “exercise with a friend” rule did not exist in last year’s March lockdown and Downing Street sources fear it is being “abused” for socialising.
