This Morning host Phillip Schofield made a moving gesture on the show on Thursday, as he offered help to a 73-year-old viewer who had been handed a huge energy bill.

The viewer had recently switched to another energy provider only to be told she needed to pay over £700.

Sharing her age, the caller revealed she did not understand how to do metre readings so never gave one, until her usage was calculated when leaving the supplier.

But she was horrified when, on top of the payments she was already making, she received a bill for £701.85.

Martin Lewis was hosting his usual segment on the show regarding money issues and questions, so the caller called in for his help.

He believed that the lack of metre readings could mean the viewer should have possibly been paying more each month than she was, and that when she left she may have owed money.

Either way, he suggested her challenging the bill to make sure there had not been a mistake.

The viewer who sounded panicked on the phone then confessed the worry of it all had led to her not eating or sleeping.

He said: "No, no no no. Don't do that. Listen, one way or the other we'll fix this for you."

Phillip added: "If the worst comes to the worst we'll pay it for you."

The caller told them that a final meter reading hadn't been done, so Martin offered to get one of his team to show her how to do it – before suggesting her grandchildren could help too.

She happily told him: "Oh thank you I've not been eating or sleeping so thank you I'm so glad I got through."

This Morning airs weekdays at 10am on ITV.
