Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has told his Manchester United players topping the Premier League is easy – but the hardest task is staying there.

Solskjaer, who takes his side to Fulham on Wednesday night, won six league titles as a player with United and knows how hard it is to get over the line as champions.

The United boss warned his squad no-one remembers who is top in January and said the only thing that matters is being top at the end of the season.

“It's not about getting there once – that's the easy bit to go up the league,” said Solskjaer.

“Staying there is the challenge and that's the challenge we're looking forward to.

“Focusing on every game, building this squad and hope that, in the end, we can lift the trophy.

“This season the lead has changed so many times. I don’t know how many teams have been top of the league.

“But the only thing that matters is who's there at the end and that's not something we discuss at the moment.

“The position we're in now is due to loads of hard work by everyone. We're halfway through the season and we're up there.

“But it's a really really congested top of the table, so we know every little run of form can move you away or with a dip of form you drop down.

“We just need to keep the consistency.”

Skipper Harry Maguire, Bruno Fernandes and Luke Shaw are all one booking away from a suspension, which could see Solskjaer rotate his personnel on Wednesday.

United will kick off the game against the Cottagers back in second place if bitter rivals Manchester City win their 6pm match against Aston Villa.
