The Met Office has issued yellow snow and ice warnings as Storm Christoph brings weather chaos across the UK.

Forecasters have warned spells of snow are likely to continue in some areas of Scotland overnight.

The snow warnings cover Dumfries, Galloway, Lothian and Borders, Central, Tayside and Fife until Wednesday at 9am.

The Met has warned some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services.

The threat of injuries caused from slips and falls on icy surfaces on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths.

Met Office forecaster Aidan McGivern said up to 5cm of snow could fall in the Southern Uplands this evening due to lingering cold air.

"That cold air still there across northern Scotland and that will start to sink southwards somewhat to mainly bring a snow threat to the hills of Northern Ireland and southern Scotland during Tuesday evening," he said.

Forecasters have also warned of “danger to life” caused by torrential rain that could bring widespread flooding, with Yorkshire and the East Mid-lands expected to be worst-hit.

Fifteen flood warnings are in place in parts of Merseyside, Yorkshire, Leicestershire, Cambridgeshire, Lincolnshire and Nottinghamshire.
