The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have revealed where their baby girl was born, a detail that was kept quiet when their first child Archie arrived.

Meghan gave birth to a 7lb 11oz daughter named Lilibet “Lili” Diana Mountbatten-Windsor, on Friday in California, the overjoyed couple announced on Sunday.

Lilibet is a touching nod to her great-grandmother the Queen, who was affectionately called the nickname by her family.

During their statement, the royal couple also confirmed that baby Lili was born at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital.

The historic hospital was founded in 1888 by 50 women determined to provide a healthcare facility for the growing community of Santa Barbara.

The structure is now a 519-bed acute-care teaching hospital and trauma centre, the largest of its kind between Los Angeles and the San Francisco Bay Area.

It is one of the closest hospitals to Harry and Meghan's £11 million mansion in nearby Montecito.

A natural birth at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital costs £10,000, while a Caesarean section is £20,000.

Every room at the hospital has wifi, a video monitor and a computer keyboard.

There is a menu to order food as well as room service, plus a pantry for women in labour and their loved ones in case they want to have any snacks.

The structure – which oversees sees 20,000 annual admissions – features outside terraces for women to walk and hot tubs for hydrotherapy.

Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital has about 600 medics and has undergone a $700million (£495 million) rebuilding plan to make it earthquake-proof.

It's a far cry from where baby Lili's two-year-old brother, Archie Harrison, was born at London's private Portland Hospital – favoured by those wanting a money-no-object birthing experience.

The couple declined to confirm where Archie's birth took place, but inevitably his birth certificate later told all.

An overjoyed Harry, speaking at Windsor Castle's Royal Mews, confirmed the news of his son's birth saying: "I'm very excited to announce that Meghan and myself had a baby boy earlier this morning, a very healthy boy."

He added: "As every father and parent will ever say, you know, your baby is absolutely amazing, but this little thing is absolutely to die for, so I'm just over the moon."

Two days later baby Archie was introduced to the world at a photocall in the castle's St George's Hall, with Meghan declaring: "It's magic, it's pretty amazing.

"I have the two best guys in the world so I'm really happy."

This time round, a statement from the couple's press secretary announced the birth of their daughter two days after it took place.

A photo has yet to be released, but the official statement appeared on the Archewell website alongside a message from Harry and Meghan which said: "On June 4, we were blessed with the arrival of our daughter, Lili.

"She is more than we could have ever imagined, and we remain grateful for the love and prayers we've felt from across the globe.

"Thank you for your continued kindness and support during this very special time for our family."

The royal couple has now decided to spread the love, by urging fans across the globe to donate to their chosen charities rather than sending them gifts.

A post on the couple's Archewell Foundation website said: "For those inquiring on sending gifts, we would ask that you support or learn more about these organizations working for women and girls: Girls Inc, Harvest Home, CAMFED or Myna Mahila Foundation.

"While the Duke and Duchess are on parental leave, Archewell will continue to do important work and publish stories on the site.

"We look forward to seeing you!"

Archie's first few months were spent in the sanctuary of Frogmore Cottage, the Sussexes' bolthole in Windsor Home Park in Berkshire, close to the Queen's residence Windsor Castle.

The Grade II listed property, which has four bedrooms and a nursery, is set close to the winding lakes, wooded mounds, glades, walks and bridges of the gardens at Frogmore.

Lili is likely to spend her early days with her big brother Archie at their parents' £11 million mansion in Montecito, California.
