A man has been arrested in Pakistan after the murder of a London university graduate following a wedding.

Zahir Jadoon has been detained by police investigating the death of Mayra Zulfiqar, 24, from Feltham, west London, whose body was found in a pool of blood on May 3 in her rented flat in Lahore.

She had been strangled and shot in the neck and shoulder.

Bruises were also found on her left foot and right hand, which indicated that the young woman had been tortured before being murdered.

The suspect, 26, is understood to have been in a relationship with the former University of West London student.

Jadoon's lawyer denies he had any involvement in the murder.

His brother and driver had previously been detained during the investigation.

In legal documents Ms Zulfiqar's uncle named Jadoon and another man as suspects.

The second man has not been arrested and is co-operating with police, his lawyer has reportedly said.

It is thought that Ms Zulfiqar – who was pursuing a career as a lawyer – extended her stay in Pakistan after the country was placed on the red list, having travelled there initially for a wedding.

Days before she was murdered she told police she had been abducted at gunpoint.

A First Information report – a document submitted to police by the victim of a crime or their family – revealed the victim had “received several threats” before her death.

Jadoon previously said he had an alibi and was in Islamabad at the time of the murder.

Ms Zulfiqar's father, Mohammad Zulfiqar pleaded for justice for his daughter, having begged Pakistan’s Prime Minister Imran Khan to take action to find her killer during a TV broadcast.

Her funeral saw her body carried through the streets and buried the day after her death as per Islamic tradition.

Photos show a community in mourning, with dozens gathered to pay their respects.
