A new documentary about Princess Diana is set to draw on rarely seen archive footage and letters from those closest to her to reflect on the Royal's inspiring life.

ITV have teamed up with 72 Films ahead of the release of a one-off documentary film titled, Diana, that will be released to mark what would have been her 60th birthday in July.

The show will trace Diana's journey, both in front and away from the cameras, as she assumed the role of the People's Princess. Producers are hoping that the landmark show will give a fresh insight into “the definitive story of the most famous woman in the world.”

Princess Diana, the mother of Prince William and Prince Harry, tragically passed away in 1997 and her death sent shockwaves around the world.

News about the upcoming feature length film came after it emerged that Prince Harry would be returning to the UK to attend the unveiling ot a statue of his mother at Kensington Palace.

Ahead of the upcoming episode, producers reflected on Diana's legacy and opened up about hopes of delving even deeper into the story of Diana's life in the upcoming show.

Jo Clinton-Davis from ITV, said: “This year would have been Diana’s 60th birthday, and the intention with this landmark documentary is to offer the definitive account of her life, both in front of the cameras and behind the scenes.

“It is a difficult undertaking to shed new light on the most emotional, dramatic and pivotal elements of the life of Diana, when that light still burns brightly.

Jo added: “But by delving deep into her relationships with friends, colleagues and staff, our aim is to provide a vivid portrayal of the woman who became known as the Queen of Hearts.”

72 Films producer David Glover also spoke about the incredible connection that Diana was able to forge with people around the world.

Glover said: “There is something a bit magical about Princess Diana, and despite the difficulties in her personal life she managed to use her connection with people to do huge amounts of good.

“Her 60th birthday feels like the perfect time to re-examine her life and legacy and explore just how she went from a relatively unknown teenager to the most mourned person who ever lived.”

ITV is also set to feature a three-part series also about the late Royal called Diana's Decades that will reflect upon her early Royal life as well as her well-documented charity work.
