Doctors are concerned about the hero who saved her twin sister from a crocodile attack as both remain injured in hospital, their other sister has said.

Identical twins Melissa and Georgia Laurie, from Berkshire, were swimming in the daytime in a lagoon in Mexico, around 10 miles from Puerto Escondido when the attack took place.

Seeing her sibling Melissa in the jaws of the reptile while swimming, heroic Georgia immediately swam towards the attack and fought the predator three times before rescuing her twin.

The 28-year-old then began punching the crocodile fighting to release her sister who had been savaged by the beast.

The twins remained in hospital on Tuesday with Melissa in an induced coma and Georgia's injuries are also concerning doctors.

Their older sister Hana Laurie wrote on a fundraising page she set up for them that Melissa's condition is "delicate" with both sisters at risk.

Hana said: "The details of this awful ordeal are still not fully known to us, as the time difference, language barrier and the fact they're both admitted to hospital are making it very difficult to communicate.

"What is clear, is that Mel's condition is "delicate" having suffered an open wrist fracture, organ lacerations/internal bleeding and water on her lungs.

"Doctors are very concerned that she'll contract an infection (as they are too about Georgia's wounds) and have put them both on intravenous antibiotics.

"Melissa has been placed into a medically induced coma, and remains in that condition while doctors attempt to drain fluid and enable her to breathe on her own."

She said the family are overwhelmed with pride that Georgia managed to save her sister.

The pair are both recovering in hospital in Mexico, with Georgia suffering injuries to her hands.

The twins were volunteering with animals in the country and had been taking a break when the crocodile attacked.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office earlier said: "We are supporting the family of two British women who are in hospital in Mexico, and are in contact with the local authorities."
