Police to crack down on domestic abuse and hate crime during Euros

Police will crack down on domestic abuse, violence against women and girls, and hate crime during the Euros 2020, Scotland Yard has vowed.

The Metropolitan Police have announced they will have air, firearms and plainclothes officers on hand to ensure the safety of Londoners and fans watching and attending the European Championship.

London will be one of the 11 cities hosting the Euros 2020, which has been delayed by a year due to the coronavirus pandemic, with eight games being held at Wembley Stadium.

Laurence Taylor, Deputy Assistant Commissioner of the Met, said that the force would have "a great many specialist units to prevent crime and disorder" and that they are "prepared and will be a highly visible and alert presence throughout."

He said the terror threat in the UK remained "substantial", which meant that an attack was considered "likely", though this warning is common practice ahead of any big event in the city and the level has remained unchanged since February, when it was downgraded from "severe".

Mr Taylor added that the force’s policing plan had a "particular focus" on "tackling domestic abuse, violence against women and girls, and hate crime", all of which he described as "Met priorities".

He concluded by saying: "We want people to look out for each other and enjoy the Euros safely and securely. We are prepared and will be a highly visible and alert presence throughout."

Plans include all games to be played at Wembley Stadium to also be shown on giant TV screens in Trafalgar Square in central London, known as the ‘Trafalgar Square Fan Zone’.

Fans will need a ticket to gain entry into this zone, for which an open ballot will start this month once the Government confirms Step 4 of the roadmap out of lockdown.

It was confirmed on Tuesday that fans watching the games at Wembley will need to provide evidence of a negative lateral flow test result or proof of full vaccination.
