Emmerdale viewers raced to Twitter to share their disgust over the latest episode of the ITV soap, while some believed they could raise important awareness about animal cruelty.

In the second of two visits to the show, adorable pup Princess was rushed to a vet after being found lifeless in a boiling hot car.

The dog had been locked in by a mystery culprit, later confirmed to be Meena, on purpose.

Luckily David found the dog in time and alerted owner Andrea, who raced Princess to the vet with new lover Charles to get help.

Vet Paddy confirmed Princess had suffered from heatstroke, and that they were doing all they could for her as she battled dehydration.

While she remained stable, Paddy confirmed she was in a bad way but would hopefully respond well to treatment.

Andrea was horrified, unsure how Princess had even got into the car given she'd been tied to a tree while they were packing for their camping trip.

It was revealed earlier on that someone had deliberately lured the dog into the car, using her favourite toy.

The pooch was then locked in on a boiling hot day, which is extremely dangerous given the soaring temperatures inside the car.

It's not clear if Meena was intending on killing the dog or just disrupting Andrea and Charles' trip, but the move left viewers horrified.

Taking to Twitter, viewers slammed the scenes as "disgusting" and "irresponsible" while some backed the storyline for raising awareness of animal cruelty, and the dangers of leaving pets in hot cars.
