Luis Suarez and Lionel Messi were snubbed as the La Liga player of the season was revealed to be Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak.

Slovenia stopper Oblak was ever-present for Atletico was they edged out rivals Real Madrid to win the title.

The 28-year-old conceded just 25 goals in all 38 games – the best record in the league.

Meaning Oblak managed to keep 18 clean sheets, almost a record of one every other match.

Oblak made the most saves of any goalkeeper in the league with just over 100 stops over the course of the season, leaving him with an 80 percent save rate.

Very impressively, Oblak managed to save three of the four penalties he faced, ensuring he kept his goals conceded to the bare minimum.

The other front runner for the La Liga player of the season was Barcelona legend Lionel Messi, who finished the year as the top scorer in the Spanish top flight.

Despite a difficult season at the Nou camp, Messi managed to score 30 goals in his 35 league appearances last term, earning his record eighth Pichichi trophy.

Real Madrid's Karim Benzema also had a brilliant season, scoring 23 times and assisting nine, while Villarreal striker Gerard Moreno scored the same amount.

Luis Suarez was Atletico's top scorer in his first season at the Wanda Metropolitano Stadium following his controversial Barcelona exit last summer, and was in with an outside chance.

Atleti stopper Oblak is being linked with a move to Manchester United this summer amid uncertainties over the future of David de Gea and Dean Henderson.

And he admitted that he was unsure where his future may lie, but insisted he is happy in the Spanish capital.

"I can't see the future, neither myself nor the club nor anyone can," he told Marca.

"It will depend on a lot of factors, such as if the club needs to sell any players or not.

"I have nothing to say about my future, I have been at Atleti seven years and I have two years left on my contract.

"I have played more than 300 games here and, while I enjoy having won La Liga Santander, I'm not thinking about anything else.

"I'm here, I'm happy. We'll see what the future brings."
