Kerry Katona has opened up on the lasting impacts of fat-shaming.
The former Atomic Kitten star, who first shot to fame at the age of 17, has revealed that people constantly commenting on her appearance and weight has ‘messed with her head’.
The 40-year-old star has been making headlines for over twenty-three years but Kerry has noticed that it’s only in recent years – thanks to the uprise in social media – that fat-shaming has reached new heights.
Kerry insisted that in today’s society, online fat-shaming and trolling should be dealt with as a ‘hate crime’.
During an appearance on Steph’s Packed Lunch on Friday, the TV star spoke out against social media bullying after a new survey reported that over three quarters of overweight adults have experienced weight shaming from doctors, families, friends or colleagues, with some saying it has actually stopped them from getting help.

Sharing her thoughts on the issue, Kerry said: “I think it should be a hate crime.
“I’ve been in the industry for so long from the age of 17, there were magazines of celebrities and ‘z listers’ like myself and they’d have the circle of shame. They’d have cellulite and stretchmarks and things like that.
“I have been sliced, diced, tucked and sucked because I feel like I have to look a certain way. I actually come in a box on a morning, you’ve got to put me together,” she joked.
Kerry went on: “But whether I’m not getting fat shamed down the street, with social media because of hiding behind a keyboard, I’ve had five kids and I think I’m still expected to look like a size eight.

Kerry’s confession comes after the star recently revealed that she’s gearing up for an array of cosmetic surgeries.
The mum-of-five is set to transform her image with a number of surgical procedures ranging from a boob job, liposuction, to a non-surgical face lift.
She’s has learned to love her body over the years, but feels sometimes she can "look a mess".

Kerry detailed her upcoming surgery plans in her latest New! Magazine column where she admitted that she’s looking forward to having a non-surgical face lift as well as a boob reduction.
“I’ve got an appointment with a doctor about having a non-surgical face lift. I feel like I’m getting jowls so I just want a little one,” she wrote.
“I’m also going under the knife in July for my boob reduction, so I’m going to tell him to tuck and suck everything on my tum while I’m there. It’s like going in for an MOT.
“Don’t get me wrong, I embrace my body and I love my stretch marks. But I look at a picture of myself and I think, ‘God, I look a mess’.

“I was 17 when I started in this industry. You get told to look a certain way and if you put on weight, you’re expected to lose it. It has definitely affected me.”
The star also recently admitted that she’s ‘counting down the days’ to her breast reduction surgery, which she hopes will relieve the back pain caused by her large chest.
