Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen turn 35-years-old today.
But what have the famous twins been getting up to over the past number of years?
The former Hollywood stars took a step back from the spotlight back in 2012 for good after fronting numerous teen movies and television shows throughout the 1990’s and 2000’s.
Here we take a look back at their lives in the limelight and what they're up to now…
The twins who first began acting as newborn babies chose to step away from the limelight in the mid-00’s due to not having a lot of creative control in the environment.

In 1987, at the age of six months, the twins were cast in the role of Michelle Tanner on the ABC sitcom Full House which they began filming at a mere nine months old.
The duo continued acting well into their teen years appearing in a wide range of TV shows and movies.
The twins starred in an array of hit movies targeted at kids and teens during their career such as It Takes Two, New York Minute, and Passport to Paris – to name just a few.
The last film the pair appeared in as a duo was New York Minute in 2004, with Mary-Kate continuing to act independently for a number of years thereafter. Her final film role came in the form of box-office success Beastly, back in 2011.
However, their acting careers officially came to a halt in 2012 when the pair officially retired to focus on finding success within the fashion industry.

The notoriously private sisters have remained mostly out of the spotlight in the years since. However, they have seen massive success in recent years with their fashion line – The Row.
Mary-Kate and Ashley are also still going strong with their monthly Spotify playlists for the luxury brand and in 2020, their high-end fashion label was even nominated for a few awards.
The Olsens are well known for abstaining from the world of social media, meaning very little about their private life is known with most fans only getting a glimpse into their world through paparazzi photos.

Last year it emerged that in May 2020, five years after the public learned that Mary-Kate had wed Olivier Sarkozy, French financier and half-brother to Nicolas Sarkozy, news broke that she had filed for an emergency divorce petition.
Mary-Kate claimed at the time that he had terminated the lease on their Gramercy apartment without her consent, and she was in danger of losing her possessions.
Court documents at the time revealed that they also owned a second New York apartment on East 49th Street. The pair finally divorced in January of 2021.
Meanwhile, Ashley is rumoured to be dating artist Louis Eisner, who she has reportedly been seeing on and off for years.

In 2016, Netflix rebooted the show which shot the twins to fame with an updated version of Full House, entitled – Fuller House.
The programme has since aired for five seasons, however, the twins were noticeably missing from the reboot as they refused to make a return to acting for the occasion.
Passing on the torch
While Mary-Kate and Ashley may be keeping out of the spotlight, it seems they may have passed the acting torch down to another Olsen sister, Elizabeth.
Elizabeth, who is just a few years younger than Mary-Kate and Ashley, has had massive success in the industry in recent years.

The 32-year-old first began acting at age four, and by 11 she'd had small roles in How the West Was Fun and the straight-to-video series The Adventures of Mary-Kate & Ashley.
In 2015 she took on the role of the Scarlet Witch in Avengers: Age of Ultron, the 2015 Avengers sequel after first appearing as the character in a mid-credits scene of the film Captain America: The Winter Soldier.
Elizabeth is best known for her role as the Scarlet Witch/ Wanda Maximoff in Disney Plus mini-series WandaVision which further catapulted her already successful acting career after its release in January 2021.
