A bride and groom hosted their wedding reception from the boot of a car in a bid to not let coronavirus ruin their big day.

Heather O'Leary and Barry Murray, both from Cork, scaled back their wedding but were determined to get married.

Heather, a vegan blogger at Vegan Is The New Black, told RSVP Live : "We got engaged in February 2019 and started planning the wedding that year – we had planned to get married on July 20, 2020.

"We wanted to have around 60 people at the reception and then another 30 at the afters.

"Then obviously Covid happened.

"We both lost our jobs in March 2020 and we had taken out a loan to pay for the wedding.

"I had sent out all the invitations, cut them out by hand and wax sealed them and everything."

She added: "The restrictions kept changing and we had to keep changing our plans.

"Eventually we decided to just get married ourselves and only invite our mums and one sister each. In the end that was a relief, to just focus on ourselves.

"I was at a wedding fair in Castlemartyr and there was a girl there, she was getting rid of all her wedding dresses and she happened to have the exact dress that I wanted!

"I went to Alterations by Kate in Ballincollig to get some changes made to it – there was mesh on the chest and I asked her to cut that off and put capped sleeves on it. She also made a matching mask.

"The leopard print jacket is from A-Wear and I've had it since I was 15!"

Speaking about the reception she said: "We had a little reception out of the car boot – Barry's mum surprised us with personalised cupcakes and champagne.

"Then we got coffee in one of our favourite cafés, Pink Moon, and had a takeaway in the evening."

She added that her highlight of the event was her friend and her girlfriend were waiting for us outside the registry office, "which was a lovely surprise."
