He's one of the best songwriters of his generation. But there’s one thing Noel Gallagher could really do without in his music career.

And it’s not brother Liam. It’s music videos.

For while many acts like Beyonce and Lady Gaga embrace the chance to get creative on screen, Noel hates starring in them so much, he’s now finding crafty ways to make his famous pals take his place.

And in the case of Matt Smith – who stars in Noel’s new video We’re On Our Way Now – the cunning plan involved inviting him over and getting him drunk, before popping the question.

Noel, 54, laughs: “I f***ing hate videos. I hate them with a passion.

“I hate the fact they f***ing cost money. And I have to p*ss around all day about in the rain.

“I’ve got two mates. I say ‘This is all I can afford, go and do what you can and I’ll be in it for 10 seconds’. If I can, I’ll blag another famous person to be in it for me.”

And that was how Noel – who last week came out in support of Prince William over the Harry rift – spotted the opportunity with good pal, The Crown’s former Prince Philip, Matt.

“We’ve been mates for a long time,” adds Noel, on Gary Kemp and Guy Pratt’s Rockonteurs podcast, released Sunday.

“And one night he was round our house and as he was leaving at four in the morning. I said ‘Ey mate you don’t fancy being in a video do you?’ He said yes. “And I sort of held him to it.”

The song is one of two new tracks on his band High Flying Birds’ best-of album, Back the Way We Came: Vol 1, which was released on Friday. Releasing a greatest hits, doesn’t mean Noel’s hanging up his guitar and retiring though.

“I would never give up writing songs for anything. I’m not into spiritual stuff, religion or therapy or all that,” he said.

“So it’s kind of my meditation. As long as you can, you should. There’s enough sh*t people have to deal with on the news, that why would you retire if you can still do it?”

There’s still little chance of an Oasis reunion however, especially after Liam, 48, yesterday called Noel a “square of the highest order” following his Prince William comments.

Talking of his Oasis bandmates, he said: “All my relationships with everyone in the band are fine apart from the one with Liam unfortunately.”

He added: “You drift apart, it’s natural.”

Not sure “drift” is quite the right word for decade-long intense public feud. Maybe he’s just practising what he sings, and not looking back in anger.
