More than 90 per cent of England's towns and cities have seen a weekly rise in Covid cases – with one hotspot now recording five times the number of cases.

Tamworth, in Staffordshire, has seen a massive jump in cases after 199 people tested positive in seven days – compared to just 37 the previous week.

It is among 291 of the country's 315 local authority areas which recorded more cases in the week to June 24 than the week before, with just 24 areas seeing a fall.

It comes as new Health Secretary Sajid Javidsaid there is "no reason" to delay ditching the remaining Covid restrictions beyond July 19.

Latest data shows infections are soaring across the UK, wth 22,868 new cases confirmed by the Department of Health this afternoon – the highest daily figure since January 30.

It means 116,287 people have tested positive for coronavirus in the past seven days – up 70 per cent from the previous week.

Hyndburn in Lancashire has England's highest rate, with 444 new cases in the seven days to June 24, the equivalent of 547.9 cases per 100,000 people.

This is up from 484.9 in the seven days to June 17.

Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire has the second highest rate, down up from 534.4 to 491.7, with 736 new cases.

The five areas with the biggest week-on-week rises are:

  • Tamworth (up from 48.2 to 259.5)
  • Warwick (88.3 to 285.2)
  • Newcastle upon Tyne (238.1 to 409.2)
  • Knowsley (146.5 to 312.2)
  • North Tyneside (225.6 to 387.7)

The government is currently mulling over whether restrictions can be lifted on July 19.

In his first Commons appearance since replacing shamed Matt Hancock as Health Secretary, Mr Javid said he had opted against bringing 'Freedom Day' forward.

Mr Javid said: "I spent my first day as Health Secretary just yesterday looking at the data and testing it to the limit.

"While we decided not to bring forward Step 4, we see no reason to go beyond July 19, because, in truth, no date we choose comes with zero risk for Covid.

"We know we cannot simply eliminate it, we have to learn to live with it."

The Health Secretary continued: "July 19th remains our target date. The prime minister has called it our terminus date.

"For me, the 19th of July is not only the end of the line but the start of a exciting new journey for our country."
