Coronation Street star Cherylee Houston will be joined by her real-life husband on the hit soap.

ITV bosses have recruited actor Toby Hadoke, Cherylee’s real-life love, to star alongside side her on the Weatherfield cobbles.

Toby will play the character Fergus, a concerned neighbour of Cherylee’s long-running character Izzy Armstrong.

But it will not be the first time Toby has acted in the soap, having previously landed three acting cameos.

He has played three different roles on the show, including as a doctor, vicar and as character Chris Baxter.

However, Toby’s latest role will see him star in the soap for more than one episode at time.

While Cherylee has starred in the soap since 2010, although viewers will have undoubtedly noticed the 46-year-old actress spent much of last year off-screen because she was shielding at home because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The actress has Ehlers-Danlos syndrome and is wheelchair-bound because the condition affects her joints and can leave sufferers in chronic pain.

And because she was deemed vulnerable, Cherylee only returned to Corrie in April.

She filmed a FaceTime segment with ex on-screen partner Gary Windass, played by the actor Mikey North.

Cherlyee is not due to return to the soap until lockdown has finally been lifted, but she has already filmed scenes at her real-life Manchester home with partner Toby.

Toby is well-known for his work on the Manchester comedy circuit and runs the XS Malarkey comedy club in the city.

But as well as being a successful comedian and writer, 47-year-old Toby has already starred in Peter Kay’s Phoenix Nights, Channel 4 hit Shameless and ITV’s longest-running soap Emmderdale.

The versatile performer has also appeared in BBC medial drama Holby City and a string of other acting roles during a distinguished TV and film career.

Toby has also appeared in a string of theatre productions, including Romeo and Juliet, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Angel in Paris and The Talented Mr Ripley.

And as if that catalogue of work was not enough to make Toby well respected in his field, he has also starred in a whole array of radio productions and is known for his voiceover work.

On Corrie, Underworld boss Carla Connor ( Alison King ) and Sarah Barlow ( Tina O'Brien ) have hatched a scheme for Izzy to work from home, but unfortunately Cherylee’s character is struggling under the crippling workload.

A frustrated Carla is unhappy with the sub-standard work and demands that if Izzy does not return to work she’ll be sacked.

Toby’s character Fergus then enters the fray and tries to protect her health during her troubles.

Reflecting on working with partner Toby, Cherlyee revealed: "It’s been percolating for quite a while.

“When you’re in a relationship with another actor, you never canvas for a job on that person’s behalf.

"But I was very lucky because I have been around and a couple of the writers knew my work and the casting directors probably first saw me about 20 years ago.

"So I think when they were thinking about telling the story, early on they thought they needed somebody else but how will they get somebody else in and one of the writers said well, Toby could do it.

"So she came up with this part that has some similarities and some differences. The character was kind of written with me in mind a little bit which was nice. It’s been percolating for quite a while but it wasn’t a done deal and it didn’t come through Chez either."

Toby also gave a little insight into Fergus before he appears on screen.

"He’s not a usual kind of fellow,” joked Toby. |He’s very kind but I don’t think he goes to many discos.

"Interestingly, in his own way he is the sort of person who’d get left behind by the pandemic as well because he’s a sort of loner and somebody who is not socially robust.

"It’s interesting talking about the disability angle. I think often when these stories are told they, quite rightly, highlight when bigots do something really unpleasant.

"But actually, a lot of the things that happen as I’ve discovered since I’ve been in a relationship with somebody who is a wheelchair user is actually the casual unkindness meted out by nice people – people who don’t even realise.”
