Nearly all towns and cities in England have seen a week-on-week rise in new Covid cases – with just 11 places seeing a fall.

Latest Public Health England data shows that 302 of the country's 315 local authority areas – 96 per cent – recorded an increase in the seven days to Saturday, while two were unchanged.

Several places saw sharp rises in the number of people testing positive, with infections in Tamworth, Staffordshire, quadrupling in a week.

Newcastle, Warwick, Gateshead and North Tyneside were among the areas with the sharpest increases.

Today the Department of Health confirmed more than 26,000 cases in 24 hours across the UK – the highest daily figure since January.

Meanwhile the number of cases in the past week stands at 135,074 – up by 70 per cent in seven days.

Blackburn with Darwen in Lancashire has the second highest rate, down slightly from 519.1 to 503.0, with 753 new cases.

Professor Chris Whitty has told ministers Covid curbs can be lifted on July 19 in what could be the strongest sign yet that Freedom Day remains on course.

According to the Times, the Chief Medical Officer told a meeting of Boris Johnson's top team the recent surge in cases was not driving up hospital admissions and summer was the right time to end restrictions.

It comes after the Prime Minister said yesterday he was "increasingly confident" that social-distancing measures could end as planned next month.

Prof Whitty reportedly told ministers to monitor hospitalisations, however, and signalled caution ahead of winter months, when people would spend more time indoors.

Sources told the newspaper the CMO had been "cautiously optimistic".

One Whitehall source said: “The view among the scientists was that we should get as much open this summer as possible before winter, which will be much more difficult. It was very encouraging.”
