Coronavirus cases are on the rise in 97% of English regions as the country prepares for the end of lockdown.

Of the 315 local government areas in England, 304 have seen a week-on-week increase in rates while 11 have seen a fall.

The five areas with the biggest spikes are South Tyneside, North East Lincolnshire, Tamworth, Sunderland and Gateshead.

It comes ahead of the end of all Covid restrictions on July 19 as nightclubs finally reopen and face masks are no longer compulsory.

South Tyneside continues to have the highest coronavirus infection rate in England, with 1,410 new cases in the seven days to July 4, the equivalent of 933.9 per 100,000 people.

This is up sharply from 377.5 in the seven days to June 27.

Tamworth in Staffordshire has the second highest rate, up from 445.9 to 833.2, with 639 new cases.

North East Lincolnshire has the third highest rate, up from 367.9 to 767.7, with 1,225 new cases.

The latest figures showing rising infections come after scientists and doctors condemned the Government’s plans to lift almost all restrictions on July 19 as a “dangerous and unethical experiment”.

The top scientists warned that letting the virus rip through the population, including children and vulnerable adults not protected by the vaccine, put the health of hundreds of thousands at risk.

Children and vulnerable adults not protected by the vaccine would face the biggest threat – including from long Covid.

Millions of people face a summer of chaos as they are forced to self-isolate when the July 19 unlocking drives up Covid infection rates.
