The Euro 2020 final will be England's first appearance at a major international tournament final since the 1966 World Cup. It will also be England's first appearance at a European Championship final.

Until Euro 2020, England's best performance at the European Championships was in 1996, when England reached the semi-final, only to lose to Germany on penalties.

Like the 1966 World Cup, the Euro 2020 final will also be played at Wembley Stadium, with the home support giving England a significant advantage over Italy.

The presence of home fans has underpinned England's success so far in Euro 2020, with all but one of the Three Lions' victories coming at Wembley. Tickets for the final are extraordinarily expensive though, with UEFA selling category 1 tickets at nearly €1000 each.

Gareth Southgate's side currently boast the best defensive record in the competition, having only conceded once, in the semi-final against Denmark.

Mikkel Damsgaard's free kick has been the only time England's defence has been breached so far this tournament, and consequently Jordan Pickford had already secured the Golden Glove award prior to the semi-final.

England captain Harry Kane will be looking to make history as he needs just one goal to win the Golden Boot outright. He is currently on four goals, making him the joint-top scorer in the competition. The England and Spurs captain also holds the Premier League 2020/21 Golden Boot award, as well as the 2018 World Cup Golden Boot – holding all three would be a first for an Englishman.

Only Alan Shearer (Euro '96) and Gary Lineker (FIFA World Cup 1986) have won Golden Boots for England.

Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling will also be in contention for the Player of the Tournament award, having scored three goals and provided one assist in his six matches played so far this tournament.

For most players in the England squad, this will be their first taste of continental success. Only Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson, and Chelsea's Mason Mount, Reece James and Ben Chilwell have won big on the European stage before, although Marcus Rashford did win the Europa League with Manchester United in 2017.

For established and experienced players like Kane, Sterling and Pickford, Euro 2020 could be their first international success, with both Kane and Sterling having lost Champions League finals in 2019 and 2021 respectively, and Pickford yet to appear in UEFA's premier club competition.
