Melissa George and Dieter Brummer were the darlings of Australian soap back in the 1990s as they played husband and wife Shane Parrish and Angel Brooks.

Dieter, who died over the weekend aged 45, revealed the pair didn't speak for almost 20 years after he left the show back in 1996.

During their soap hey day, they played one of the most adorable couples on TV.

in one of the most memorable scenes, Angel was left in a wheelchair shortly before her wedding and despite fears she would never walk again, struggled to her feet to get herself down the aisle to marry her man.

However, Angel and Shane's happiness was short-lived as Dieter's character contracted septicaemia and died – leaving his wife heartbroken.

However, it was later revealed that despite their bubbling chemistry on-screen, actors Dieter and Melissa didn't actually get along in real life.

There were even reports suggesting Dieter had asked Home and Away bosses to write him out of the show because he was tired of working with his onscreen wife.

The first big hint about their frosty relationship came in 2012, when Dieter opened up about the tensions with Melissa in an interview with Woman's Day.

He said: "We may have been love interests on the show but the chemistry was far from real," he told the magazine. "Mel was incredibly ambitious right from the outset. I think she wanted to be the next Kylie Minogue.

"She was a big fan and she aspired to be a big star just like Kylie. I don't think she had much time for the cast of Home and Away ."

The feud was seemingly confirmed by Melissa when she filmed a reunion show for the soap, Home and Away Endless Summer, in 2018.

She explained: "There was a lot of pressure on us", she said. "We had to look like the perfect darling couple in public."

The pair's co-star Ray Meagher, who played Alf Stewart, also touched on the pair's offscreen relationship, saying: "I'm not sure that they got on personally 100 per cent, 100 per cent of the time."

Tensions bubbled back up to the surface when Melissa let rip in an interview after an Australian TV show called her a "Home and Away actress."

Speaking to Melbourne’s Herald Sun, Melissa ranted: "My next call will be to Home and Away to ask them to pay me because nobody does more promotion for that f***ing show than me.

"I don’t need credibility from my country anymore; I just need them all to be quiet. If they have nothing intelligent to say, please don’t speak to me anymore.

“I’d rather be having a croissant and a little espresso in Paris or walking my French bulldog in New York City,”

She added: "I've never spoken out about it because I have to be the loyal good Aussie, who goes away and comes home.

"But I'm a really hardworking woman and people have to respect me for what I've done."

Dieter later responded to her comments, telling Woman's Day: "I think they were unnecessary and a bit ridiculous – but then that’s Mel."

In the interview, the actor was described as "still rolling around laughing after the latest rant from Melissa George" and he joked he’d also rather be "walking his French bulldog and enjoying a croissant" but would settle for a takeaway coffee and a cuddle with his 10-year-old fox terrier.
