A child has died after ambulance crews took two people to hospital following a serious stabbing in north Belfast.

The community in the Ardoyne area of North Belfast is said to be in shock this evening following the incident.

Police have launched a murder investigation and arrested one person after the death of a child in the Brompton Park area of north Belfast, the Police Service of Northern Ireland has said.

In a statement, they said: "Police have commenced a murder investigation following the death of a child in the Brompton Park area of North Belfast this evening and made one arrest in relation to this."

Police arrived at the scene at around 8pm before paramedics followed on, Belfast Live reported.

A spokesperson for the ambulance service said: "The Northern Ireland Ambulance Service received a 999 call at 20:16 on Tuesday 27 July following reports of an incident in the Ardoyne area of North Belfast.

"NIAS despatched a Rapid Response Paramedic and two emergency crews to the scene. Following assessment and initial treatment two patients were taken to hospital in Belfast."

A video circulating online shows numerous police offices and members of the public in the road, with one woman appearing to be in particular distress.

People Before Profit councillor Fiona Ferguson said: "Devastating news from Ardoyne. All my thoughts are with the family involved and the community who are in a state of shock.

"Few situations are as difficult as this and local support is paramount.

"Would appeal for people to refrain from public speculation in respect for all involved."

According to Cllr Paul McCusker some residents helped police before the ambulance service made it onto the scene.

He said: "Terrible sad news tonight in Ardoyne involving a mother and two children.

"Police are continuing their investigations of what happened in Brompton Park.

"We now need to give them time to do this without speculating and think about those involved and the wider family.

"Lots of shock from residents, some assisting police before the ambulance service arrived.

"Thanks to those who helped tonight."

Cllr Fiona Ferguson described the incident as "devastating".
