Production on Fantastic Beasts 3 has shut down due to a case of Covid-19.

Filming for the third instalment of the Harry Potter spin-off series, which stars Eddie Redmayne and Jude Law, had been taking place in Hertfordshire.

According to the Mail Online, the film temporarily halted production at their studios in Leavesden.

They reported that a Covid-19 infection has affected the cast and crew, with fears mounting about the South African variant strain of the virus.

Due to the insistence on production shutting down, it is suggested that it is a high-profile cast member who cannot be replaced.

A source told the publication: "Production is only halted if someone cannot be filmed. No one is saying who it is, but it's someone who cannot be replaced.

"The studios have been one of the most secure Covid places since they reopened so there are real fears that it is the South African variant that has got through."

The insider adds that the cast and crew are currently unsure of when production on the third instalment in the series will resume.

It is also noted that the studios are a mere half-hour drive from Broxbourne, Hertfordshire where the UK government confirmed that the South African variant strain had been identified.

Danish actor and Casino Royale star Mads Mikkelsen has replaced Johnny Depp in the role of series villain Gellert Grindelwald.

Depp stepped down from the franchise following the results of a UK High Court libel case against News Group Newspapers, the publishers of The Sun, who had accused him of being a 'wifebeater' in his marriage to Amber Heard.

The court sided in the newspaper publisher's favour, but Depp is pursuing an appeal against the decision.
