Man who ran over and stabbed girlfriend 30 times after eating ‘space cake’ cleared of murder

A man who ran over and stabbed his girlfriend 30 times after eating a "space cake" has been cleared of murder.

Cannabis user Jake Notman, attacked his partner during a psychotic episode in Tamworth, Staffordshire.

Notman, 27, admitted manslaughter after jurors heard that he inflicted more than 30 stab wounds on university student Lauren Bloomer, who was studying at their home in Bingley Avenue due to Covid-19 restrictions.

Prosecutors had claimed Notman intended to kill but he was cleared of murder on Wednesday after the Crown accepted his mental state meant there was no realistic prospect of a conviction for the charge because he did not realise "what was real and what was not".

The car factory worker, whose legal team argued that he had "totally lost touch with reality" after eating a cannabis brownie, is expected to be sentenced later on Wednesday at Stafford Crown Court.
