When do the bins go out?

The majority of Britain's homes will have their bins collected either a day early or a day late this Easter – however, this will be different for every council.

Schedules change because people throw out so much over the Bank Holiday, councils sometimes add another waste day to compensate – and this can affect the other ones on the calendar.

If you're living in England and Wales, this tool will make sure you get the day right.

Just enter your postcode, and it will direct you to your council's collection page.

Why do councils collect waste?

Councils are legally obliged to collect your waste for free under the Environmental Protection Act, but they have the power to decide when and where that will be.

Unrecycled waste is usually collected weekly, while recycling collections are normally weekly or fortnightly.

Some councils have experimented with monthly collections. In 2016 we told how one scheming local authority forced elderly residents to drag their bins for miles in a bid to cut costs.
