A source told the newspaper that he was “openly discussing” the idea of staying in his modest terrace house in North London.

But cops have said there is no way they could make his Islington home secure unless they sealed off the entire street.

A Labour insider said: “It’s part of Jeremy’s attraction to voters – he just doesn’t want to give himself airs and graces.

“I think his wife Laura would also prefer not to move to Downing Street. It is a bit like living in a goldfish bowl.”

A source told the Mail on Sunday: “He’s been told it would be a nightmare. The police have said that there’s no way they could make his Islington home secure without sealing off the whole street.”

If Mr Corbyn had his way he would be the first Prime Minister not to reside in Downing Street full time since the Marquess of Salisbury – more than 100 years ago.

Labour said the claims were “just Westminster village tittle-tattle”
