A horrific scene of flames and smoke rising from the mini substation was seen by bystanders during the woman's tragic death.
Her phone was found at the site alongside her badly burned body in Kuznetsy village, 50 miles east of Moscow.
Witnesses told police that the woman – aged between 18 and 24 – was “trying to take a selfie”.
A witness named Olga, said: “Most likely she decided that she wouldn't touch anything and nothing bad would happen.
“But it is enough only to climb on the transformer structure to get a severe electric shock.”
The witnesses were unable to stop her, according to reports.
A police spokesman said: “A female body was found on a transformer unit.
“Investigators are conducting a check into the incident.”
Police have issued an appeal for the identity of the woman because her description does not match anyone reported missing in the area.
