Arsenal have reportedly had a £40m bid for Brighton and England centre-back Ben White rejected as they look to secure an early bit of transfer business.

White had an impressive season for the Seagulls, making 36 Premier League appearances, and his fine form saw him earn a late call-up to the Three Lions' Euro 2020 squad.

The Gunners are known to be keen to bolster their squad following their hugely disappointing 2020-21 campaign, and a new defender is believed to be one of their priorities.

And according to Sky Sports they have already moved for White, with their first offer knocked back by Brighton.

It is claimed the clubs are still locked in talks, however, and Arsenal are expected to return with an improved offer, and are confident of landing the 23-year-old before too long.

It is expected that White would be happy to make the move to the Emirates, and it would be certainly intriguing to see how he gets on at a club who will be aiming for a challenge for a top four place next season.

The player himself recently opened up on his call-up to the England squad, and admitted it is taking time for it to sink in just how much he has achieved in a short space of time.

He told reporters: "It's been very surreal, obviously I didn't think this was going to be happening. I thought I was going to be somewhere hot, in Portugal or something like that.

"It's mind-blowing really I didn't expect any of this to happen, even being in the 33-man squad was enough for me. To make it to the final squad was unbelievable.

"I got a call from someone at Brighton telling me the manager was going to call me and I was just waiting for the call.

"I don't think I've let it settle in yet. It's something that I have never felt before, news like that doesn't normally come around.

"I was just speechless really, and it felt amazing."

Arsenal, meanwhile, have discovered their fate for the new Premier League season, and face a trip to newly-promoted Brentford on the first day.

They then have another London derby against Chelsea before taking on Manchester City in what looks a tough start on paper.
