Jean Slater will be troubled by an unexpected phone call on EastEnders next week.

The grandmother has been struggling in secret with the belief that her cancer has returned – although this remains uncomforted and she is choosing not to treat it.

Jean’s worries have increased since daughter Stacey Slater was wrongfully imprisoned earlier this year for pushing Ruby Allen down the stairs of the latter’s nightclub.

However, in recent weeks, Jean has grown closer to Ruby as the nightclub owner helps husband Martin Fowler to raise his children with Stacey.

Now Jean will be a real support to Ruby as she struggles with her endometriosis diagnosis and treatment.

On Monday (July 26), Ruby is getting her belongings ready for her operation and then Lily Slater reminds Martin that she has a dentist appointment.

Ruby tells Martin that he should prioritise his and Stacey’s daughter, so she plans to go alone to the operation.

Thankfully, Jean spots Ruby and keeps her company through the difficult time.

Martin later reveals how grateful he is to Jean for being there for his wife.

The following day, Ruby returns home from the hospital and offers Jean some money to aid her financially.

Jean quickly declines the offer but then Ruby suggests they do face masks together – despite Kat Slater being unimpressed.

Ruby is delighted to have some relaxing times with Jean, admitting she never experienced times like this with her own late mother.

However, events take a darker turn when Jean gets an unexpected phone call.

What news will Jean receive and who is phoning her?

Meanwhile, on Friday, Martin decides to take the children to summer school so he can celebrate his birthday.

Sadly, Ruby has forgotten that it is Martin’s big day and is busy getting troubled by comments from those around her.

A comment from her ex-boyfriend Jay Brown and remarks from Kat leave Ruby shaken.

Is Ruby's paranoia another sign of her worsening health situation?

Later, Jean reminds her that she has forgotten about Martin’s birthday, prompting Ruby to realise her big mistake.

Can Ruby set things right with her husband Martin? And what is Jean’s big news? Could this news tear apart the ladies' new friendship?
